AS9100

1 What is AS9100

The emergence of AS9100 standard originated from the common needs of organizations and their suppliers in the aerospace industry. The globalization of the aerospace industry and the differences in regional/national requirements and expectations pose severe challenges to the organization and suppliers of the aerospace industry. On the one hand, an organization faces numerous suppliers and the challenge of ensuring the procurement of high-quality products from suppliers around the world and at all levels of the supply chain, as well as achieving standardized procurement requirements. On the other hand, a supplier will also face numerous customers. The supplier needs to deliver products with different quality expectations and requirements to different customers, as well as respond to frequent second party audits with different customer requirements. Therefore, both the organization and its suppliers hope to establish an international aerospace quality management system standard, unify aerospace quality management system requirements, and replace third-party audits of numerous suppliers with third-party certification.

2 The AS/EN/JISQ9100 standard series is applicable to industries

AS/EN/JISQ 9100 is applicable to the entire supply chain, not limited to the aviation manufacturing industry, but also to equipment design and manufacturing, airport and airline operations, parts supply and maintenance, aviation operations and logistics.

EN/AS/JISQ 9100 is applicable to enterprises that produce new materials, parts, and other materials.

EN/AS 9110 is applicable to enterprises engaged in maintenance and repair operations.

EN/AS 9120 is applicable to distributors/dealers of aviation components.

3 AS9100 Implementation Process

Step 1: Determine which management system to adopt

The ISO9000 management system is applicable to many industries, but for a company providing aviation industry products, its management system should meet the requirements of AS9100.

Step 2: Purchase Criteria

Purchasing standards and familiarizing oneself with their concepts and terms is the starting point for implementing AS9100.

Step 3: Refer to relevant literature and software

At various stages of implementing an AS9100 aerospace quality management system, you can find many useful tools, and we recommend the "Certification Road" published by BSI as a reference.

Step 4: Form a group and reach strategic consensus

The implementation of AS9100 requires the commitment and support of top management. On this basis, an organizational strategy should be formulated and an implementation team should be formed.

Step 5: Training

It is recommended to deepen the understanding and mastery of standards through participating in training. There are many corresponding training courses to choose from.

Step 6: Select the certification body

As an independent third party, the certification body will evaluate the effectiveness of your quality management system. If the standard requirements are met, a certificate will be issued to you. It not only represents a commitment from you, but also a symbol of your effective implementation of the quality management system to customers, suppliers, and management organizations. When choosing a certification body, you should consider industry experience, geographical location, price, and service level.

Step 7: Write a quality manual

As a high-level document in the system, the quality manual should describe the organization's business purpose, how the business is carried out, and how to meet standard requirements, etc.

Step 8: Understand the special requirements of AS9100

AS9100 special requirements include control of key design features and emphasis on meeting regulatory/customer requirements.

Step 9: Write supporting documents

These are some program files that support the quality manual, used to describe how to complete a task (by whom, in what order, according to what standards, and what work to complete?)

Step 10: Implement a quality management system

Once the fundamental task of document writing is completed, we can enter the stage of implementing the quality management system.

The successful implementation of the system relies on effective communication within the organization and employee training, which enables each employee to accept the principles of the system and consciously implement the system documents.

In the implementation of the system, attention should be paid to keeping records, which is evidence of your "doing what I say and writing what I do".

Step 11: Consider pre audit

Pre audit services are usually conducted 6 weeks after the implementation of the system. The purpose is to identify which areas have not met the standards. This will enable you to consider areas for improvement before the initial review.

Step 12: Obtain Certification

After completing the preparation and successful implementation of the system, the initial certification audit can be arranged. At this stage, the certification body will conduct a systematic review of your quality management system. If approved, you will be recommended for certification.

The certification certificate represents your commitment to quality management and can be used for external promotion and business expansion.

Step 13: Continuous Review

To maintain the certification certificate, you only need to continue implementing the quality system according to the standard requirements. The certification body will regularly review the implementation status of the system to ensure that your system continues to meet the standard requirements.

5 The significance of implementing AS9100 standard

1. The market scope continues to expand

Your certification can open the door to untapped domestic and international business opportunities for you. In addition, the AS certified quality system helps establish a common language and expected level among businesses. By setting the same standards for the company, the goal of improving efficiency can be achieved, otherwise it cannot be achieved through individual/owner quality systems.

2. Significant reduction in sales costs

Your certification has established the credibility and commitment of your company in terms of quality from the very beginning. Due to its more direct explanation of the details of your QMS and demonstration of its effectiveness, it can help you win the trust of potential customers in a shorter period of time.

3. Significant reduction in transaction costs

Due to the AS9100 certified quality system, it promotes the continuous improvement of your products and production processes, allowing customers to receive fewer defective products and avoiding many returns and consumer complaints. Your quality investment can reduce the cost of each transaction and thus generate profits.

4. Improve overall efficiency

A unified and widely accepted system based on process management, an AS certified quality system, helps you improve your products and production processes. This can help you develop better relationships with your suppliers, business partners, and consumers, putting you in a more advantageous position in the market.
